GPT 4o Mini is OpenAI’s new ‘affordable’ model that doesn’t cost much for developers – How it differs from larger models
The OpenAI GPT 4o mini is here, marking OpenAI’s attempt to capture the low-cost mini model market. Yes, it’s smaller and lighter, unlike the GPT 3.5 or GPT 4o. However, according to OpenAI, it is more capable than GPT-3.5. The move is intended to address the cost issues developers face when using some other AI models. With GPT 4o, OpenAI want this model to reach more people and make app development cheaper.

OpenAI GPT 4o: What’s New
Recently, we’ve seen how popular some other lighter models are, including Google Gemini 1.5 Flash, has become popular because of its cost-effectiveness. Here, GPT 4o brings more to the table. OpenAI calls it “the most cost-effective small model” and claims that GPT 4o scores 82% on MMLU and even outperforms GPT 4 on conversational preference on the LMSYS leaderboard.
In terms of cost, it costs 15 cents per million tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens. Additionally, it supports text and vision in the API, with support for text, image, video, and audio input coming soon.
Simply put, despite being a lighter car, it packs a punch and can even outperform some heavier cars in certain categories, which is why it is set to replace the GPT 3.5 Turbo in the future.
GPT 4o: What’s different from larger models?
Unlike larger models like GPT 4o or GPT-4, smaller models require much less computing power, making them cost-effective and easy to scale. The main benefit of this approach is that smaller developers, who may not have a lot of capital to work with, can leverage the resulting AI to develop their applications.
However, the scale varies. More ambitious models such as GPT 4 and Super Gemini perform better overall, thanks to their superior text and question answering capabilities. The main difference lies in the number of tokens a model is trained on.
GPT 4o Mini is now available for ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Team users will be expanded to Enterprise users next week.
