GP surgery accidentally texts patients they have ‘aggressive lung cancer’ – instead of Happy Christmas | UK News

A surgeon general in Doncaster accidentally texted patients they had “advanced lung cancer” – instead of wishing them a Merry Christmas.

Askern Medical Practice is said to have made the unfortunate mistake of Friday afternoon, December 23, notifying patients that they had metastatic cancer.

About 20 minutes later, a follow-up message conveyed the surgeon’s “sincere apologies” for the previous message and said they meant to wish everyone a happy holiday.

“At first I thought this was a sick joke?” Carl, 42, told Sky News.

He is among those who are said to have received disturbing messages.

“And then I smoked too so do they know something that I don’t?

“I sat there and worried about it for a while, it really stressed me out,” he added.

The first message also mentions the DS1500 form, which is issued to people believed to be terminally ill.

“What the hell am I thinking, do I have cancer? I have terminal lung cancer?”

When his mother told him she had received the same message, it was clear that it was not a real diagnosis.

“That’s enough to destroy someone,” Carl said.

Carl, from Doncaster, said the second text apologizing for the diagnostic message was “absolutely disgusting”.

He said it felt like the surgery was trying to “cool off” the issue aside.

Carl said he’s been signed up for surgery for 30 years but is now converting after this incident.

Sky News has approached Askern Medical Practice for comment.
