Govt raises allocation to NHAI by 44% for road maintenance | India News

NEW DELHI: The Department of Roads and Highways has revised its allocation for NHAI for National Highway (NH) maintenance at Rs 1,300 crore, almost 44% higher than the current allocation for the fiscal year. current main. This comes amid concerns about properly maintaining the bank, including by the parliamentary standing committee.
In an order issued last week, the ministry said it had allocated Rs 400 billion more to maintain NHAI’s banks compared to the existing Rs 900 billion allocation. This amount will only be used for the specific purpose. NHI has made a special effort to make all of its sprawling potholes pothole-free.
Similarly, the allocation for NH maintenance by state public works departments (PWDs) has been revised to Rs 280 billion from the previous allocation of Rs 132 billion. Officials said additional allocations have also been made to repair rain-damaged roads in various states. “The department revises funding allocations considering the request over time,” said an official, adding that even the current level of funding allocation for road asset maintenance belongs to the agency. State highway management agencies and PWDs are also less.
Nearly 50% of the banking network across the country is still managed by the state PWD and state agencies take funding from the state budget for this activity. Ministry of Road Transport.
In recent years, ministry-related parliamentary committees have raised concerns about the under-allocation of funds for maintenance and repair (M&R) by banks and have repeatedly recommended that the government government should increase the allocation for this within the Union. budget.
In the final report titled “Issues related to the road sector”, the workshop mentioned that NHAI and the expressway department are managing M&R of banks with an allocation of only about 40% compared to actual requirements estimated by the Department. Proposing 100% funding to meet the requirement, the council stated, “Maintenance and repair should take higher priority than construction of new NH… Any budget cuts… any M&R that could lead to the deterioration of roads built with hundreds of crores of the national budget would be a national waste.”
In fact, despite the high speed of highway construction and expansion, the government regularly faces criticism for poor maintenance of some sections of the highway. Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari also instructed engineers to use materials that have a long life and do not require frequent repair and maintenance.
