Google supports Matter for Android devices, Nest Home products for interoperability with smart devices

Google has announced that its Android, Google Nest and Google Home devices starting today will be compatible with smart ecosystems from other brands. This has been realized by the search giant through the support of the Matter protocol on the aforementioned devices. Matter is a royalty-free, open-source, next-generation unified protocol for smart home device connectivity developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). The alliance, which was first formed in 2019, has about 300 companies participating, including the likes of Apple, Samsung, Amazon and Huawei.

According to an official blog post from the search giant, Google Nest and Android devices, have been automatically updated to support the Matter protocol. The list of Matter-enabled devices, as of today, includes Google Home devices like Google Home smart speaker, Google Home Mini Smart Speaker. Google Nest devices like Google Nest Mini, Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Hub, Google Nest Hub (2nd generation)The Nest Hub Max and Nest Wifi Pro also get support for Matter, according to the company.

Google also added Matter support for Fast Pair on Android this will allow users to quickly connect Matter-enabled devices to their home network, Google Home, and other smart devices.

Matter uses wireless technology based on a combination of internet protocol (IP) and Thread protocol. Smart devices from different brands used different technologies or protocols to build their smart devices, which resulted in the smart devices being incompatible with each other.

The Matter smart home standard also allows devices that were previously heavily dependent on internet and cloud connections to function, working even offline. Reducing reliance on internet and cloud connections also reduces the latency between human actions and smart device responses. This is perhaps one of the most important advantages Matter brings to the smart home ecosystem, and one that can truly revolutionize the adoption and ease of use of smart devices. Generally speaking.

Google also announced that it is continuously working with industry partners to improve the smart device operating protocol.

The search giant also confirmed that it is working with South Korean conglomerate Samsung to develop an integrated Multi Admin feature that allows users to have cross-platform control over smart devices and operating systems. their smart home. The company has confirmed the multi-admin feature will launch sometime in 2023.

Meanwhile, Google also announced that it will support Matter on iOS through the Google Home app. However, the search giant avoided mentioning a timeline for the same thing.
