5 Google Play Store changes when Epic Games wins lawsuit

  1. US District Judge James Donato emphasized that Google must open Android to third-party app stores to reduce the tech giant’s dominance and monopoly over how users can download apps. This allows end users to access and download alternative app stores on Android devices.
  2. Google Play Store will now allow app developers to include in-app payment methods, as earlier it was regulated or we can say restricted by the tech giant. This will also benefit developers in increasing their profit margins.

3. Developers can now include links to app download methods other than the Google Play Store. Therefore, strict Google restrictions or policies have been put in place that allow users to search for alternatives.

4. Developers can offer users alternative payment methods instead of using the Play Billing system for transactions, so here Google’s restrictions have been modified.

5. App developers can now set their own fees without Google Pay Payments fees. Therefore, Google cannot share app revenue with individuals or organizations.

These rules will be followed for the next three years, however, Epic Games requested a deadline of six years. “The provisions are designed to level the playing field for the entry and growth of competitors without unduly burdening Google,” the US judge said. With the hearing, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney celebrated the victory and announced that Epic’s store and other third-party apps will be available on the Google Play Store starting in 2025.
