Google announced on Wednesday that developers can now test Google Password Manager’s password lock support on Android and Chrome. Password is designed as a more secure alternative to passwords and traditional two-factor authentication methods. Google claims that passwords can’t be reused, don’t leak when the server is breached, and protect users from phishing attacks. Since passwords have been developed using industry standards, they will provide a consistent user experience across Windows, macOS and iOS, and ChromeOS. The company is expected to release a stable version of the feature later this year.

The passwords are then backed up and synced through the cloud to prevent users from being locked out if they lose their device. Password recovery will require the user to enter the screen PIN, password, or pattern of another device that has access to the password encryption.
Google states that the PIN, password, or screen lock pattern for passwords will be stored in secure hardware. However, Google or any other organization will not be able to read this data. If the malicious user fails to enter the correct information 10 times or more, the password will become unusable. However, the original user can still restore using an existing device.
The company has promised to deliver even more updates to Android by 2023, and plans to allow third-party validators to support password locking.
