Google is said to be working on a system that converts physical SIM cards into eSIMs. This will also allow users to easily transfer an existing eSIM from their old device to their new device. Google just started shipping the Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 release, giving Pixel fans a preview of all possible updates in the March Feature Drop. This latest version contains code that says major quality-of-life advancements to the Android eSIM experience, in addition to 31 new emojis and a feature that lets you tie themed icons on your home screen.
According to a theme of tweet by tipper Mishaal Rahman, Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 introduces a new system property called ‘euicc.seamless transfer enabled in non qs’. This hints at an upcoming feature through which users will most likely transfer their eSIM profiles from their old Android phone to their new phone. Users can also convert the physical SIM card from the old phone to the eSIM profile from the new phone.
Android currently do not allow users to transfer eSIM profiles from one phone to another. To do so, users need to deactivate the eSIM profile on their old phone and activate it on the new device. The process is rigorous and users may have to contact their carrier to activate the eSIM on a new phone.
On the other hand, iOS includes a built-in Quick Transfer feature that allows users to physically transfer or eSIM from an old device. Iphone to a new model without contacting the service provider. Google supposedly trying to bring similar functionalities to Android.
The tweets also add that Google is incorporating the feature into the SIM Manager app on its Pixel phones, as well as some phones with Google Mobile Services pre-installed. However, full compatibility information is not yet available.
Transferring an eSIM between devices is not a native feature of the eSIM configuration, the tweets added. This means that Google may not be able to make this feature available to all Android devices through the use of AOSP, and instead, Google may have to limit the feature to Pixel phones at an early stage. . An eSIM transfer may be limited to moving from one Pixel to another or factory resetting the same device. Switching a physical SIM profile to an eSIM may be carrier dependent.
