Google launches user-selected payments test in India, four other markets


Google is expanding its third-party in-app payments pilot program to new markets including India, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, and the European Economic Area (EEA). With the latest update, non-gaming tablet or mobile app developers can use an additional payment system in addition to the Google Play payment system. Service fees will be collected from developers under the selected payment pilot project. When consumers choose to use an alternative payment system, service fees paid by the developer are reduced by 4 percent.

Searching giant announced the expansion of its user-selected payments pilot program to India and four other markets through its support page. With the latest update, non-game app developers with registered businesses in India, Australia, Indonesia, Japan and the European Economic Area (EEA) can use the mechanism alternative payment together with Google Play app market.

There will be a 4% reduced service fee for developers when consumers use an alternative system, Google.

“We’ll share more in the coming months as we continue to build and iterate with our pilot partners,” PTI reported, citing a Google spokesperson. At checkout, the user can choose which payment system to use.

Under the pilot program, developers are required to report the amount of all paid transactions from the alternative payment system to Google Play for billing.

The company is owned by Alphabet and Apple currently facing global surveillance for forcing software developers to use their payment systems, charging high fees, and allegedly engaging in anticompetitive behavior. In early March, Google allow Spotify uses Spotify’s payment system as well as Google Play Billing in select countries as part of the new initiative.
