Google I/O starts virtually May 11 with ‘limited’ live viewership
Google just announced that their annual I/O developer conference will take place at the Shoreline Amphitheater on May 11 and 12 with a “limited live audience”. This will be the first time there has been any live component of I/O since 2019, but details are scarce at the moment as to who will be in that audience.
“Save the date” that Google just shared says that this year’s event will be “totally free and open to all virtual people” and encourages potential attendees to “plan to follow along online. ” From the sound of things, Google will only be using the Shoreline Amphitheater as a venue for the broadcast, not a place where attendees can congregate, but we’re contacting Google to confirm this. Basically, haven’t booked any plane tickets to California yet, because chances are you’ll be watching at home just like last year.
The old Google I/O is completely canceled in 2020 in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and the events of 2021 virtual place, like so many other tech events that have taken place over the past two years. While US cases have dropped significantly since peaking earlier this year thanks to the Omicron variant, it seems Google is putting safety first.
