Google has begun offering refunds for games and hardware on Stadia

Google has started refunding their recently boxed game streaming service, Stadia. Those who purchased any games, hardware or add-ons have been told they will get their money back by January 18, i.e. when the lights go out and all access to the games on Stadia are all turned off.

The situation turned sour for the Stadia team, and many developers were baffled by Google’s failure to announce Stadia’s impending demise. If you’ve spent the past three years mainly buying games through Stadia, that’s a great deal of luck.

If you purchased any Stadia hardware, i.e. a controller, then Google will now encourage you to check your email to see if they ask where you want to send the money. Most refunds will happen automatically, although anyone who has changed their card details could be in trouble. I see a lot of answers reporting faff.

The developers who were recently working to bring their games to Stadia got a much worse deal, as they found out at the same time as the public after sinking in critical hours of development. The reason largely lies with Google’s superiors, as the Stadia team itself, without warning, learned of the outage through a hastily convened meeting on the day of the announcement.

CJ talked to a developer was contacted by Google for compensation, so hopefully they’ve at least extended that to all those affected.

Bungie, IO and Ubisoft all are working on transfer everyone’s progress and save files to other platforms.
