Google Fires engineer claims its AI is conscious

SAN FRANCISCO – Google fired one of its engineers, Blake Lemoine, on Friday, more than a month after he raise ethical concerns about how the company tested an artificial intelligence chatbot that he believes has achieved consciousness.

Google spokesman Chris Pappas said Lemoine, a senior software engineer in its responsible AI organization, “has repeatedly violated its employment and data privacy policies. including product information protection requirements”.

The company, which denies that its chatbot language model is emotional, fired Mr. Lemoine from his job with pay in June. Mr. Lemoine confirmed the dismissal in a text message on Friday, and said he is meeting with attorneys to consider his options. First shot covered by Big Technology news.

Mr. Lemoine caused a stir last month when he told The Washington Post reports that he believes Google’s Language Model for Conversational Applications, or LaMDA, is sentient – unleashing fears that AI is moving closer to a sci-fi movie and a real life. There is fierce debate about whether a computer program can really have a soul. His suspension also led to conspiracy theories about whether it was part of a Google cover-up.

For Google, it’s another tool in the line homegrown controversy on the ethics and role of AI, an area of technology where the company has bets on its future.

Mr. Lemoine’s argument that LaMDA is sentient has been criticized by the company and many other AI experts, who argue that these types of chatbots, software that simulate text-based conversations with other people, are often used for customer service – not advanced enough to be conscious.

“If an employee shares concerns about our work, as Blake did, we take them in holistically,” Mr. Pappas said. “We found Blake’s claims that LaMDA was completely baseless and have been working to clarify that with him for several months.”

In addition to his concerns with the media, in June, Mr. Lemoine said he had delivered the document to a US senator, whom he has not identified, and claimed that they provided evidence that Google and its technology engage in religious discrimination.
