Google Chrome update with Passkey support released on Android, Windows and Mac


Google Chrome for Android, Windows 11 and macOS has been updated to include passcode support. The search giant started rolling out support for passcodes in October, and it’s now available on Google Chrome’s stable channel version 108. Keycodes allow users to sign in to websites and apps through The authentication process is similar to unlocking the device. The system is designed as a more secure alternative to traditional passwords and two-factor authentication, which the company claims protects users from malicious reuse, leaks or server breaches as well as phishing attacks.

Passwords have been designed by the search giant to work differently across different operating systems and browser ecosystems, with those generated on iOS or in The hunt on macOS use iCloud Keychain for storage, while Chrome on Android uses Google’s Password Manager. Meanwhile, Chrome turns on Mac OS and Windows currently using device local storage to store passwords, Google confirmed blog post.

Password generated in Chrome browser above Android will be available across devices as long as sync is enabled via Google Password Manager on all devices.

However, passwords generated on Chrome for Windows won’t be available across devices because Chrome currently uses Windows Hello for storage. Users will also have to scan the QR code with another device that already has the passcode to allow the key to be generated on the local Windows device when logging into the site for the first time.

Meanwhile, passwords generated on macOS will also not be available across devices because they are also stored locally. Scanning a QR code is also required at first sign-in on Chrome for macOS to activate password registration.

Passwords generated on iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 will be synced across users’ devices Apple device and can be used by other browsers and applications. Passwords will be stored on these devices on iCloud Keychain. However, Chrome on iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 does not support password autofill, the blog post confirms.
