Goodyear develops 70% sustainable tires – In Action
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company announced the release of a demonstration tire with 70% lasting– material content.
Chris Helsel, senior vice president, global operations and chief technology officer, said: “We have an ambitious goal by 2020 to create a tire made from 100% sustainable materials. within 10 years. .
The 70% sustainable tire consists of 13 components featured across nine different tire components, including those described below. The company’s performance indicators have shown the component properties to deliver the tire’s strong overall performance.
- Carbon soot is included in tires to strengthen the compound and help increase their life and has traditionally been created by burning various types of petroleum products. Goodyear’s new tires come in three different carbon black colors made from methane, carbon dioxide and vegetable oils. The initial life cycle assessment shows reduced carbon emissions compared with current carbon black production methods or the use of biological or waste feedstock sources.
- The use of soybean oil in tires helps to keep the rubber compound of the tire supple under changing temperature conditions. Soybean oil is a bio-resource that reduces Goodyear’s use of petroleum products. While nearly 100% of soy protein is used in food/feed applications, a significant amount of excess oil remains and is available for use in industrial applications.
- Silica is a common ingredient used in tires to improve traction and reduce fuel consumption. Goodyear’s new tires contain a unique variety of silica produced from rice husk ash, a by-product of rice processing that is often discarded and ended up in landfills. A high quality silica has been produced from this waste ash.
- Polyester is Recycling from plastic bottles and other plastic waste by converting polyesters to basic chemicals and converting them to engineering-grade polyester that is workable for tire cords.
The 70% sustainable tire was produced as a demonstration tyre.
