Gold Phoenix Breeder: ‘We’re All Excited’

According to horse breeder Jim Ryan, when it became the latest Class I-winning import for trainer Phil D’Amato at Santa Anita on Sunday, Gold Phoenix (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}) advertised quality that Ireland offers to international buyers. by Miltown Stud.

Gold Phoenix brought glory to Frank E Kilroe Mile S. glory to D’Amato, who did the same with Rhea Moon (Ire) hybrid Irish (Ire) (Sparkling banner {Aus}) and Going Global (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) recently.

It was gelding’s first win at Dundalk for Kieran Cotter in 2021 that drew the attention of his current relationships, to which Gold Phoenix was at full power, culminating in race success. worth that $250,000 at Santa Anita.

Ryan said, “We were all excited. It’s great to see a horse that you bred continue to do well. He also has a very cute brother longing here, and he’s a lot like Gold Phoenix. mare [Magnifica (Mizzen Mast)] is Lucky Vega’s (Ire) pony, which is great, because it’s from the same crossbreed we’re looking forward to it. She will give birth in the next few weeks.

The Gold Phoenix, which Ryan bred and raced in partnership with the late Dr. Kai Chah Tan, owner of Dragon Pulse (Ire), did not sell at the Goffs Sportsmans Sale in 2019. This horse was sold bought nearly 10 years ago at Keeneland for $70,000, Ryan believed her craving for Belardo was better than what the market had given him and decided to put him in training, a decision was well-rewarded.

Ryan recalls: “Time flies so fast – I bought the mare in Keeneland almost 10 years ago and she worked hard to bring us luck. I like Mizzen Mast and she is his good looking mare. She is also a winner and her brother won the Hong Kong Derby. It’s a great Juddmonte family and with a Juddmonte family anything can happen at any time. It’s just a case of changing the mating and sometimes that works. In this case, obviously.”

He added, “The Gold Phoenix has always been a very nice horse. He always looked like he was going to be a good racehorse and that’s why we went back to Belardo again. We don’t usually do it, but because Gold Phoenix was so cool we did.

“It’s a lovely pony and an adorable young, very light-footed and a great walker, but that’s the way it is – it’s just fashion. We will trust him. If they don’t make enough money and we count on them, we don’t mind taking them home and putting them in the saddle. We are always ready to do that.”

In addition to appreciating D’Amato, Ryan pointed out that the win advertised once again the Dundalk racecourse, and more importantly, the Irish race as a whole, as a suitable incubator for the riders. future top racing.

He said, “It is extraordinary how well Phil D’Amato has done with his European crossbred horses and it is a great advertisement for Dundalk racecourse. As for the horses that can get out there and run well around the world, I think that’s a great advertisement for the track and the people that are running it. “There will be more buyers for owners in Ireland when people know that this kind of success can happen. It was a good advertisement for the Irish race.

“It’s also Belardo’s first Class I winner, so you have to be excited about that too. Belardo is a lovely horse and represents more success for Ballylinch Stud and John O’Connor, who bred it.”

After Mr. Tan’s death, Ryan was supported by the support of his longtime friend John Kirkland, who enjoyed considerable success with Ocean Quest (Ire).Sioux Country) and Ocean Vision (Ire) (US Navy Flag) last year. In fact, Ocean Quest won first place of the year at Curragh for Jessica Harrinton last term while Ocean Vision became Tim Donworth’s first listed winner in France. Both horses lead what is believed to be a promising string of about half a dozen horses that Kirkland trains in France and Ireland this year.

Ryan said, “We bred Gold Phoenix on behalf of Dr Tan, which is the Mighty Universe, and teamed up with him to race. Sadly, Dr. Tan passed away a year and a half ago, and it was a very sad time for us. It’s a pity that he didn’t live to see what Gold Phoenix achieved. He’s had a lot of success, including with Dragon Pulse, and many of the horses he bred in Ireland have continued and reaped success in Singapore for him. He was a great man and was ahead of his time.”

He added, “John Kirland partnered with me on Ocean Quest and Ocean Vision. He’s been a huge supporter of ours for the past two years and a great partner to have. John has been a friend for over 25 years and when Dr. Tan passed away, he decided to take up the position.

“We have half a dozen horses to look forward to this year and we hope that Ocean Quest can turn out to be a lovely three year old. She might even be in the Commonwealth Cup category but she will first start in the Guineas Test at Leopardstown to see if she gets seven feathers. We will play it by ear.

“Ocean Vision was third in Doha by more than a mile last week. It was his first time going more than a mile and he stayed very well. John is enjoying it and has been a huge success.

“Matilda Picote (Ire (Sioux Country) is also bred here. Funny enough, Ocean Quest and Matilda Piccotte shared the same paddle when they were kids, and when they ran in Ballyhane S. last year, they were picked on either side of the track and raced for different coaches but only a short distance apart. in the end. It’s quite extraordinary.”
