Going to Goa? Your rental car and bike could soon be electric-only

Goa Premier Pramod Sawant has announced that all new tourist vehicles in the state registered from January 1, 2024 will be required to be electric, the Hindustan Times reports. This means that next year, when you visit Goa, your rental scooter or motorbike can only be an electric model. In addition, license holders with multiple tour taxis, bicycle rental and cab-hailing operators will be required to retrofit 30% of their EV fleets by June 2024.

The minister made these announcements when he spoke at the inaugural meeting of the ‘Energy Transition Working Group’ on enabling policies to promote electric mobility. Speaking at a gathering at the event, he also said that in the future, all government purchases of light motor vehicles will also be electric vehicles only. “New government light motor vehicles purchased from January 2024 will be required to be electric,” he said.

Citing the reason for the move, Sawant said the state’s vehicle density is 4.5 times higher than the national average, largely due to tourism. Goa is ranked 15th in the world for vehicle density as more than 850,000 tourists visit the state each year while the actual population of the state is 150,000.

As a result, tourist vehicles make up a major part of vehicle density and are therefore a major cause of the increase in carbon emissions in the state due to the large number of taxis, rental cars and buses that tourists use to get around. “Based on recent research conducted by GIZ, 40% of all carbon emissions generated in Goa are due to vehicle activity,” said Sawant.

Electrifying these vehicles is in line with the country’s ambitions to accelerate their use. “Diesel and gasoline are dying technologies. And they will die soon, and the age of electric vehicles is inevitable,” Niti CEO Aayog Amitabh Kant said while speaking at the G20 Sherpa event.
