Admittedly it’s very early days, but one of the more promising 2-year-olds to make their debut so far at the prestigious Saratoga meeting hasn’t even gotten a picture of her.
Purebred Godolphin Spelterini (f, 2, Bernardini – Keepshercool, by Smart Strike) flies home to end an eye-catching second on Opening day program of Spa 14/7.
Last of six games after a slow start from her inside draw, a 13-1 shot was taken by Junior Alvarado to keep pace while taking fifth in an opening half with a scoreline. number: 22.54.
It looks like she’s done her job in the same position close to the fourth column, she’s given the widest of all five or six as they head straight home and sprint down the middle. center to finish in half the length of the person who starts running first, the second Half a Chance (Flatter). That’s another length back to first-timers trained by popular Todd Pletcher and $475,000 FTFMAR Graduate Chocolate Gelato (Realistic jokes) in third place.
Spelterini, coached by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, won a very respectable 78 Beyer Speed Number for the effort in the 5 1/2.
“We’re very pleased with the way she’s run, especially with the winner already off to a head start,” said Bloodstock Godolphin director Michael Banahan.
“She didn’t break all that well, but had a good education in racing and ran strong over the rope. A few jumps behind the rope and she was ahead. We like her. She was well trained. We were hoping for a good run. You never know with those 2 year olds, especially in Saratoga. We wish her back to be a girl later in the meeting and hope we can take it one step further.”
Located off the Smart Strike Keepshercool mare, the bay is aptly named for Maria Spelterini, an Italian tight-knit walker who famously crossed Niagara Falls as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the United States in America. in 1876.
7-year-old Keepshercool, the sixth to be beaten well in the Belmont slopes on a solitary trip to headquarters, is a half-sister to GSW & MGISP Penwith (Bernardini); MGISP Center (AP Indy); GISP Tranquil Manner (AP Indy); and Collective (Bernardini), the dam of MGSW Shared Sense (Street Sense).
Spelterini’s second dam is Composure (Touch Gold), a two-time First Class winner and Runner-up in the 2002 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, which brought in $3.6 million from Sheikh Mohammed’s operation. at the sale of KENOV in 2003.
“[Keepshercool] She ended up injuring herself while training and had to repair her ankle,” said Banahan.
“We’ve liked her since she was a pony and we hope that she does well. That never really worked out, but we liked the pedigree. We had a bit of luck there. It was a family that we did well together. “
