New Delhi:

Ghulam Nabi Azad, who left Parliament on Friday, met today with three party leaders who are part of the “G-23” or group of dissidents – Anand Sharma, Prithviraj Chavan and Bhupinder Hooda .

Leaders visited Mr Azad at his home in Delhi and asked him “firsthand” why he had quit without consulting them and why he did so even after Sonia Gandhi announced internal elections for a new parliament speaker, according to former Maharashtra Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

Mr Azad claimed his position had become untenable because of a “palace plot” against him by a section of Parliament, according to Mr Chavan.

Mr. Chavan welcomed the party’s elections and also the Gandhis’ refusal to run for president. “Elections should be free and fair,” he said.

Mr. Azad abandoned his party for five decades on Friday, criticizing Rahul Gandhi in a five-page resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi. He accused Rahul Gandhi of “childish and immature behavior” and blamed him for the decline of Congress and the election defeat.

He left the party a few weeks before the October 17 election for the new speaker of the National Assembly.

Anand Sharma expressed shock and said the development would “hurt all congressmen”. “It is a serious development and will hurt all MPs. I am personally shocked. The situation was completely avoidable. We had hoped that there would be a serious introspection. important but unfortunately, that process was overturned,” Sharma said, shortly after Azad’s departure. was announced.

Mr Azad, 73, led the “G-23” or 23 dissidents who wrote to Sonia Gandhi in 2020 calling for a complete overhaul of Congress and “clear, full-time leadership space and visible”.

The “rebels” group, which includes leaders such as Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari and Mukul Wasnik, has been very vocal in demanding sweeping organizational change in Parliament to prevent a change in its leadership.

Another prominent member of the group, Kapil Sibal, left the party in May.

Mr. Azad has said that he will throw a party in Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement triggered an exodus in the Jammu and Kashmir Parliament.

Some 64 senior leaders of Parliament, including former Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Minister Tara Chand, resigned today in support of Mr. Azad.
