Ginni Thomas, a longtime GOP activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, will appear on Thursday before the House panel on January 6. The caucus was confirmed by the panel of judges. sources familiar with the committee’s work.
The committee first asked to interview Ginni Thomas about her contact people who are promoting a plan refute the results of the 2020 election, including her discussions with John Eastman, one of the campaign leads. Eastman, a conservative attorney, has drafted a memo outlining plans to withhold electoral votes in several states and serve as an outside legal adviser to President Donald Trump by the end of 2020.
Thomas has admitted she attended a Trump rally on the morning of January 6 in Ellipse, but criticism of violence at the Capitol after the protest. In the weeks leading up to the attack on the Capitol, Thomas contacted White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, in text messages raising concerns about voter fraud. Legal challenges in several states allegedly rigged in the 2020 election were dismissed by the courts.
White House lawyers and advisers to then-Vice President Mike Pence have resisted efforts by Eastman and other Trump allies to ask Congress to overturn the election results, saying it violated Constitution and would be overruled by the Supreme Court if the matter was contested there. The court declined to hear the election challenges of Trump and his allies, and Justice Thomas disagreed, saying the judges should have heard the case. Some critics argue that he should have repurposed himself from the scandals surrounding the election due to his wife’s political advocacy.
After announcing her contact information with Meadows, Thomas said she was ready to show up, and months of negotiations followed.
The January 6 committee was scheduled to hold its ninth and possibly final investigative session this week, but postponed the public session due to Hurricane Ian. President Bennie Thompson said he plans to announce a new date soon.
