There are no reports on this year’s PBA Governors Cup.

LA Tenorio and Justin Brownlee were sure of it – to Tim Cone’s pleasant surprise.

“Am I shocked? It’s correct. I’m shocked that we’re here,” the Grand Slam coach said Friday night, after Tenorio scored 30 and Brownlee boxed 17 of his 24 points in the third inning to lead Barangay Ginebra past. past Meralco, 103-92, in game 6 of their championship contest.

Gin Kings finished Bolts, 4-2, in the best of seven series.

“At this point, we are a bit shocked because we have fallen so far at one point in time. I mean, we’ve really hit the bottom of the barrel,” Cone said.

The American coach, who brought his league-leading total to 24, was referring to the fact that at one point in the conference, the Gin Kings needed a crucial win in the knockouts. their last match only to reach the knockout round.

And if there’s a chance for Meralco to remake the season-ending script, it’s this year.

“But you know, ‘never say die’. We’re a team that doesn’t give up,” said Cone, whose team lost two of the first three games in the series.

“We have that legacy, and it’s always been an honor and a curse to try to live up to that because it’s really hard to survive,” he added. “But these people have been looking for ways to do it.”

And so, the Bolts have now lost four Governors’ Cup titles to the Gin Kings.

Tenorio had 15 points in the first half and, after Brownlee and Scottie Thompson produced a strong third round, hit a triple-break that gave Barangay Ginebra a 101-88 lead.

“[W]I did that little mini run, and that changed the game,” Cone said.

After a tight first half where both teams were frozen, the Kings came out on the field full. Brownlee helped create a spread of 78-73 into the fourth round before Ginebra took 11 straight points, giving it a spread of 96-80.

Brownlee added 16 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals as the Kings nailed their 14th franchise crown. Meanwhile, Tenorio was tied with four rebounds and four assists for his best scoring record in the series — which couldn’t have come at a better time.

“In matches like this, my instincts come into play,” said Tenorio. “In games like this, it’s not about Xs and Os anymore. It’s about making in-game adjustments and reading how the game plays out. “

Thompson, who finished with 15 points and three steals, was named the Final’s Most Valuable Player. Christian Standhardinger, who joined Tenorio to keep Ginebra afloat in the first half when Brownlee missed, added 19 points and 13 rebounds.
