At that point, the captain indicated that he was refueling. Gibraltar officials said they decided to run the carrier aground, half-submerged, to prevent it from sinking. Port authorities attempted to repair the hull but it broke in half and by Wednesday, low-sulfur fuel oil had begun to leak into the sea from the tank’s vents.
