GGG Claims Canelo ‘Didn’t Take Bivol Fight Seriously’
Gennady Golovkin believes Canelo Alvarez’s loss to Dmitry Bivol will bring a new attitude in Mexico ahead of their long-awaited trio match.
‘GGG’ is looking to avenge a name that has eluded him during his 44 professional fights, as well as claim the undisputed super-middleweight crown in the process.
However, the Kazakh veteran knows that the Canelo he met in the ring on September 17 will be a much different fighter than the one he met in 2017 and 2018. The 32-year-old is looking to return to victory after his first defeat since being knocked out by Floyd Mayweather nine years ago.
However, Canelo has managed to define his legacy of moving into light heavyweight to become a belt holder at 175lbs for the second time. Bivol overcame the four-weight world champion, in the end the stronger man is bigger.
In an interview with LA timesGolovkin told them:
“I’m sure he’ll take it more seriously than when facing Bivol. Against Bivol, he doesn’t take it very seriously.
“Honestly, I don’t pay much attention, I don’t listen. With his attitude, he appeared to be someone of a lower class. He has probably revealed his true face. I’m very disappointed that he hasn’t developed as a professional athlete. “
Calls for a three-way fight between Golovkin and Canelo came after some controversial decisions in the first two matches between the pair.
Their first match was judged to be a draw with many believing Golovkin would be the winner. Canelo took the second win and although much closer, there is still much debate about their verdict on the final outcome.
However, the now 40-year-old Golovkin looks ahead in excitement for the couple’s third meeting.
“The trilogy is something big, historic, it’s hard to see a rematch between fighters these days because it’s simply not exciting.”
“When you have this trio, it means people are asking for it, that you’re on the level of legendary boxers, and you’re part of history. You feel proud, happy. It has a lot of meanings. “
It won’t be just Canelo, however, who will have a new look at them since their last, with Golovkin getting the help of Jonathon Banks since his split from Abel Sanchez in 2019. , Banks comes in with a wealth of experience, having worked with the likes of Wladimir Klitschko.
“Abel Sanchez cannot be compared with Jonathon Banks. Both have different approaches to training, and I can say that I am very pleased with Jonathon Banks. I am delighted with the opportunity to work with him.”
