Gervonta Davis’s Coach Ford Predicts Tough Fight For Hector Garcia

Via Allan Fox: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis coach Calvin Ford said that with everything that happened to his boxer in the media, he “feels sorry” for rival Hector Luis Garcia for their bout on Saturday night, on Showtime PPV.

Tank (27-0.25 KOs) will vent his frustration with Hector (16-0, 10 KOs) and vent when they meet at the lead in the Premier Boxing Champion event at the Arena Capitol One in Washington, DC

Regardless of what Gervonta, 28, has to do to motivate him, he will need to because he cannot lose this match if he is to face Ryan Garcia in April in a big game that will feature branched out to his 10-year professional career.

Gervonta will compete for the first time since leaving the advertising agency of Floyd Mayweather Jr. If he lost, boxing fans would point and say that without Floyd’s defense in terms of the light fight he was doing, Tank would have collapsed in an instant.

“I’m still in training mode,” says Gervonta Davis coach Calvin Ford fight. “It is important that I look at history. History shows that when you have a big fight before a game, pay attention to that big fight,” Ford said of how he wanted Gervonta to focus on Hector rather than April’s fight with Ryan Garcia.

“Given what is happening in the media with Tank, I just feel sorry for him. They continued to pour gasoline on the fire. I don’t train Tanks to take down. In this particular fight, all the energy and things that he has in mind will be poured into the person in the ring.

“He has nothing to lose,” Ford said of Hector Garcia. “That would be his most aggressive approach to me. This is another level, so we have to see.

“We will treat it as if we can’t go anywhere unless we do our job in the ring.

“Demond Nicholson and Andrade because they’re both in the same lane right now,” Ford said when asked which base fight appeals to him the most. “Demond is trying to achieve that. Andrade is trying to get to the rest of the PBC battle.

“I will go with Demond. Demond is my guy,” Ford said of the man he supported during the Andrade-Nicholson fight. “I know Demond. He asked for this opportunity. When he was fighting Berlanga, he had hiccups. It’s not a war in itself. That’s him.

“Now everything is ready. He’s at home, big fights again, big name. So he has all the buttons in place. He just has to do what he has to do.

“It’s his story. I think he’ll enjoy it,” Ford said of Gervonta’s affair with Conor Benn on social media. “His [Tank] knockout odds same as Deontay Wilder.

“We’re just making sure he’s doing what he’s supposed to do,” Ford said when asked how he kept Tank Davis from falling in love with his power. “He’s not really looking for knockouts.

“In the camp, I wrote in his head, I like this punishment. I said, ‘Let me watch you punish a guy. Can you punish a man?’

“The Beast,” Ford said when asked about heavyweight contender Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, who was fighting in the lower division on Saturday night. “He was ready for all of them [Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford].

“The only thing ‘Boots’ is missing is a guy-name. Be honest. That’s all he’s missing. Listen, [Keith] Thurman won’t be fighting him, so that tells me something. It’s going to be an interesting fight because that’s his name.

“Once he gets past his name, that will let us all know he’s ready. I will always give Boots an advantage because I’ve been following him since he was a kid. I have known all these warriors since they were children. I grew up with all of them.

“So when they see me, they say, ‘That’s Coach Calvin right there.’ It doesn’t look like it’s new. That’s why I always stay neutral with all of them because I grew up with all of them.

“I don’t know because Spence & Crawford are number 1. Notice how I say, ‘#1’, because they haven’t fought yet. It will happen. You must remember that a lot of strings must be [pulled]. It will happen.

“If you go back and look at my track record, that happens. Ford said.
