German police raids target group suspected of far-right plot to overthrow government | World News

Some 3,000 police have conducted raids across Germany to prevent a plot to overthrow the government by a far-right terrorist group.

Federal prosecutors said 25 suspected members and supporters of the Reichsburger group – the so-called Citizen Reich movement – were detained during raids in 11 of the country’s 16 states in early Wednesday.

Twenty-two German nationals have been detained on suspicion of “being members of a terrorist organization” and three others, including a Russian citizen, are suspected of aiding the group.

Armed police are said to have stormed into up to 100 homes across Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony and Thuringia.

The Reichsburger movement brought together a number of far-right groups whose aim was to remove the current government and replace it with their own.

According to the authorities, members of the group have been prepared to “take actions based on their ideology” since November 2021.
