German Police Block Off Parts of Dresden After Standoff With Gunman
BERLIN — Police in Germany cordoned off parts of the historic old city of Dresden on Saturday morning and evacuated a shopping mall there because of clashes with an armed attacker, including two hostages. was arrested.
Police said they believe the suspect, who they identified as a 40-year-old German citizen, shot his mother before moving to the city centre. The man’s mother, 62, was found dead in a residential multifamily home early that morning.
Police said after arresting the man that the two hostages were not injured.
The city’s traditional Christmas market was not allowed to open on Saturday morning because of the unrest.
