Georgia’s election leader had paint spilled on him

The head of Georgia’s election commission was splashed with a black liquid, believed to be paint, while announcing election results in parliament.

Official Giorgi Kalandarishvili was shot dead while confirming a parliamentary poll that the pro-Russian party had won.

Kalandarishvili signed a protocol saying Georgian Dream had won another term, which sparked days of protests in the capital Tbilisi.

Pro-Western President Salome Zourabichvili described the vote as illegal, accusing Russia of meddling.
