Winning the 2011 World Cup was a pivotal opportunity for Indian cricket. After winning the World Cup in 1983, this was the first time the Indian cricket team won the ICC tournament over 50 years old. Gautam Gambhir played an important part in that victory. He was the second-highest scorer for India at the 2011 World Cup with a total of 393 runs in nine matches. He scored four plus fifty, with his highest score – 97 – in the final against Sri Lanka. Gambhir gets the highest score for MS Dhoni– beat India in the final and helped the team chase the goal of running 275 times in 48.2 rounds.

Gambhir has now revealed that before India’s semi-final against Pakistan, several senior players told him that they “had to get rid of the conversation from 1983.” The players mentioned the achievements of Kapil Dev– The Indian team at the 1983 World Cup.

“Two or three senior players come up to me and say ‘we need to win this tournament because we have to pause the conversation since 1983. We have to get their job done’, ” Gambhir said in an interaction with The Indian Express.

“I said I’m not here to kill anyone. I’m not here to shorten someone’s line. I want to win this to lengthen our line. If the media gives them a job from 1983 to 2011 it was the media’s problem, not ours. We needed to win the World Cup because we wanted this country to be happy. That’s something that needs to change in the future.”

After taking a break from international cricket in December 2018, Gambhir entered politics and was an MP for Lok Sabha. He is also part of the support staff of Lucknow Supergiants in the Indian Premier League.
