Gareth A Davies Discusses Conor Benn Losing License, Shocked Not To Disclose It

Via Barry Holbrook: Today, Gareth A Davies was surprised to learn that Conor Benn gave up his boxing license last Friday before his meeting with BBBofC.

Davies was also surprised that Eddie Hearn, the Benn promoter, didn’t mention this when talking to him. Gareth guesses that Hearn will tell him about it in “no record” time.

Today Hearn said he believes there is a possibility of VADA infection in Benn’s drug test, which came back positive for the banned substance clomifene.

Benn has yet to be banned or suspended, but he could return soon once the investigation is complete.

“I suspect that there is a legal proceeding going on for him to have his name removed and he has decided to remove himself from the ban or suspension,” Gareth A. Davies told iFL TV about Conor Benn’s loss of his boxing license prior to his meeting with BBBoF last Friday.

“So he basically gave up his license, which was a reasonable thing to do until he could prove it. [he’s innocent]. They did not ban or suspend him, but they did claim that it was a misdemeanor.

“Apparently they accepted the UKAD report that VADA had found an adverse finding in his body. So he’s responsible for that, whichever way you see it. He is responsible for what is in his body.

“They have yet to go public to sample B. The biggest shock for me was sitting with Eddie Hearn today from about 8 p.m. to 12 p.m. until one-fifteen, where Eddie Hearn, and rightly so, believes his boxer is innocent, and he totally feels it. I hope Conor is innocent and pure, but Eddie never mentioned to us from the national papers that Conor had given up his license..

“Honestly, I find that instills confidence. Obviously, the management had to tell us that, but we had a lot of record-breaking time today with Eddie, and I’m surprised he didn’t tell us.

“As I am writing my story in the words of Eddie today about the tardiness and slowness of the board in responding, no contact with them from the Friday before fight week through through Tuesday or Wednesday when they called the war while they were still going. through wanting to testify before the board to try and get this over the line.

“I was just worried that he didn’t tell us today, during lunch or while sitting down in a private room on Baker Street. I was surprised when that statement came out, but it is so. Everything is in limbo.

“Eddie has told us both on and off the record that you will hear the Conor case. I completely trust him. I sat in a room with him, Tony Sims and Nigel, his father, where they made it clear to me that he really had no clue how this got into his body. .

“In many ways, I am intrigued to see what the defense will look like for this. We really enjoyed Conor Benn. Most people are when they meet him. He is a wonderful person. You want to believe that he’s not cheating. You really want to believe, but who knows? Only Conor and the people who work with him.

“We know now, but we didn’t know earlier today that the license was issued. The defenses will be established, and it will take several weeks for this to happen.

“UKAD will conclude their investigation based on VADA’s findings on clomiphene, and the board will have him in front of them again. They will make a decision on whether he should be banned, whether it’s two months, four months, eight months, one year, two years.

“But I doubt if he can’t come up with a reliable reason why clomiphene traces, picograms, tiny, tiny picograms are found in his system, then I doubt if there isn’t one. a possible defense is attached and he has no excuse, its just an egg or whatever, they will have to ban him in my opinion or suspend him for a while long.

“As they did with Tyson Fury, who’s been out for almost two years, they’re going to push his suspension back, and we probably won’t see Conor in the ring for a year’s time to a year’s time. . That’s what I think will happen.

“We won’t see him in the ring until this time next year. That’s my instinct on this one, and I don’t think we’ll ever see a fight between Benn and Eubank. It’s very interesting.

“Eddie said he really regrets the 26 hours that the board issued a statement shortly after the morning of the game week. Eddie reveals why in 27 hours.

“I specifically asked them, ‘Why don’t you do anything for the next 26, 27 hours,’ and he said, ‘Because we’re discovering things? Some have said to keep fighting. He wasn’t banned or suspended, but I decided we weren’t going to go with another committee, and we were never going to do that. ‘

“His words were, ‘We could have gone into the third November in Abu Dhabi with that fight.’ So they could have gone on, but it’s right for boxing. He said the board made the right decision and he believes now the right decision has been made.

“Why did they take 27 hours? In those 27 hours, I think boxing was pulled through the mud. Whatever anyone says, legally or otherwise, as soon as the board says the fight is called off, I think they should say, ‘We’re going to have to do with it.’

“The board will not have a hearing before Saturday, as they did with Dillian on Saturday morning of the game. This is different because it’s a UKAD test, so they can go ahead and do it.

But they have a need for UKAD to agree to look at the VADA test in order to get that hearing. Unfortunately, these things take time. What we have learned from this is, and Eddie strongly agrees, is that if another agency, not the statutory body with UKAD, reveals an adverse finding that needs to be passed right away.

“It needs to be dealt with immediately, and then we don’t have this situation where the optics on boxing look like people are covering it up. He said, ‘The last thing we want to do is sweep it under the rug. Everyone feels uncomfortable with this situation. ‘

“Those are his words. He’s been very transparent and very open today, but I just think Eddie has a few regrets about the way he went about it.

“They found out about the cancellation on Wednesday while they were on their way to practice. From my point of view, if I were the promoter, I would make a statement there and then.

“I called a media team and said, ‘Can we phone a media team? Cancel the event now, because it will leave nothing murky about it.

“I don’t think Eddie is trying to do anything silently. I just think he’s stretching the legitimacy of the situation, looking at the parameters.

“In the future, I think the Boxing Control Board needs to look at how they do the other tests because they have known since September 23, and they should have acted faster. There is no doubt about that. They should act faster.

“He also stated, Eddie, that canceling the contest was not his contractual right because Chris Eubank Jr wanted to continue the contest. They have to wait for the board’s decision to cancel,” said Davies.
