Furiosa topped the box office with a no. #1 worst Memorial Day weekend movie in decades

It was a close race but the wasteland warrior of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” came in slightly ahead of the plump orange cat with an estimated $32 million in ticket sales over the four-day weekend according to studio estimates Monday. “Garfield movie,” One Sony released, earning $31.1 million in its first four days.

The dust won’t officially settle until Tuesday when the final numbers are announced, but for now at least Warner Bros. had the No. 1 movie in the country. Including international screenings, the film’s active global earnings are $64.8 million. But victory has been a long shot for the $168 million production starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. Prequel by George Miller took theaters by storm thanks to great reviews and was expected to have at least a slightly stronger debut.

For Sony, the release of the more modestly budgeted “The Garfield Movie” is a win even without the bragging rights of the top spot. The animated film featuring the voice of Chris Pratt is likely to have a long run at the box office as the summer holidays begin for school-age children. With its early international release, “The Garfield Movie” earned more than $91.1 million against its $60 million production budget.

But this weekend was also a sad week for Hollywood was one of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office showings in decades, except for 2020 when theaters are closed. Ticket sales are down 22% since 2023, and the gap could widen as the summer progresses. Remember, this time last year “Barbenheimer” hasn’t even happened yet.
