Free Fire Sea developer announces plans to halt game streaming platform, job cuts at Garena Unit: Report

Sea is said to have cut jobs at a live streaming app under the Garena gaming unit. According to a report, the Singapore-based company has halted its plans to develop a game streaming platform, which will no longer be updated. It is also reportedly planning to shut down a number of blockchain and cloud-related corporate projects at its development division, Sea Labs. The company has faced a number of obstacles, including a government ban on their Garena Free Fire game.

According to a report by Reuters citing two sources familiar with the matter, Sea notified workers at the Booyah live stream and community service! that it does not plan to update the application. According to the report, the company’s decision to stop developing the app will result in 40 layoffs.

Meanwhile, the company is also said to have shut down major projects – related to blockchain and public cloud projects – while laying off “dozens” of employees to improve its bottom line, the report cited a third person with knowledge of the development.

The report says that a company spokesperson said it is focusing on the long-term strength of the ecosystem and that it has “made a number of changes to improve the efficiency of our operations that affect to several roles”.

Garena free fire, Sea’s popular battle royale game, was among mobile apps and games that the government banned in February. The ban issued by the IT Ministry resulted in the immediate removal of Free Fire, AppLock and 52 other apps from Google Play and Apple’s App Store in the country. Sea later warned that they would be affected by the ban in India, where the game has a large player base.
