Frank Warren talks angry-Usyk negotiations and reveals wallet split
Frank Warren has moved on to clarify the split that Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk would get if they met.
The pair are in talks to clash in an undisputed heavyweight title fight, and it is likely to happen before the end of the year.
Fury, the WBC champion, named by Usyk last weekend after he beat Anthony Joshua for the second time.
Ukraine Men (20-0, 13 KOs) overcame ‘AJ’ through a strange division decision at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia and shortly thereafter called out ‘The Gypsy King’ (32-0-1, 23 KOs).
Fury, who recently gave the fight backers a deadline of September 1 to secure the money to carry out the confrontation, which will also be for the WBA Super, IBF, IBO, WBO and Ring Magazine titles in the sport’s top division, quickly accepted the challenge.
And now Warren, who promotes Fury in the UK with Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who looks after his US affairs, has spoken about the negotiations.
He said talkSPORT:
“The terms of the deal are really simple, it will be a 50/50 split, but that is where we can generate the most income to make it work.
It was an easier fight to make instead of Joshua because there was no opposing pusher involved. Usyk’s people are free agents and that’s not the point. “
Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) is promoted by Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn and since his debut in October 2013. He recently signed a huge broadcast deal, committing his future to DAZN streaming platform.
But Usyk currently doesn’t have any broadcast options and is also understood to be a free agency in terms of advertising.
Warren, who emphasized that Joshua is now in the ‘catch up club’ after his second defeat at the hands of the undefeated Usyk, added:
“As for whether there will be a rematch, I don’t really know. It depends on what packages are put together.
What I focus on is starting the fight. That’s what we want to see.”
Saudi Arabia would be an obvious choice to host the showdown that would claim its first undisputed heavyweight world championship since Lennox Lewis in 1999, but even the oil-rich nation – seems to have gearing up for a third world heavyweight title fight, having hosted Usyk’s win over Joshua last weekend as well as ‘AJ’ victory in a rematch against Andy Ruiz in December 2019 at Diriyah Arena in Diriyah, just six months after he was dropped four times in seven rounds at Madison Square Garden in New York in June of that year – will struggle to meet Fury’s exorbitant demands.
The aforementioned Arum revealed earlier this week that he hopes “biggest heavyweight fight since .” [Muhammad] Ali vs. [Joe] Frazier “cshould be donewith December 17 set to be the day of the fascinating outdoor clash in the Saudi capital Riyadh, on the eve of the FIFA World Cup final in neighboring Qatar.
