Foxconn produces iPhone 14 in India

NEW DELHI: India is set for Apple’s flagship manufacturing iPhone 14″ smartphone with the company confirmed that the devices will be manufactured in India at contract manufacturer Foxconn’s factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
This will probably be the fastest scale-up Apple has initiated in setting up production in India with the latest iPhone being made there within weeks of its global launch on the 7th. September.
When contacted, the company confirmed the development. “The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking technologies and critical safety capabilities. We are delighted to be manufacturing this device in India,” Apple told TOI in a statement.
The sources said that the Indian-made devices will not only be sold domestically but also exported to the global market. However, manufacturing in India will not mean lower device prices.
Apple currently has 3 leading smartphone manufacturing partners globally in India. Those are Wistron, Foxconn and Pegatron.
The company started making iPhones in India in 2017 with iPhoneSE. Currently, Apple also manufactures iPhone SE, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 in India. All three players enjoy production benefits offered as part of the government’s producer-linked incentive (PLI) program.
The growing engagement in India comes at a time when the company is understood to be looking outside of China for strong manufacturing operations. China accounts for the majority of the company’s production, and it is estimated that Apple sources up to 95% of its goods from the Land of Dragons.
The Indian government is said to have asked the US electronics giant to generate US$50 billion worth of annual manufacturing output in the country in 5-6 years and to expand its home-made product range beyond the iPhone, including the iPhone. including Macbook, iPad, Air Pod and watch.
Apple has been working on a ‘Made in India’ program for its other products, but has so far only invested in the iPhone. Apple is said to have had revenue up to 3 USD. 5 billion in India for the financial year ending September 2021, although a large portion of this turnover came from products that were largely imported from China and not produced domestically. Sales of Indian-made products will be low for now, thus prompting the government to push the company to consider increasing its commitment to manufacturing in India.
Manufacturing potential looks bright for India. Apple’s global revenue for the fiscal year ending September 2021 reached $365 billion, of which $191 billion came from iPhones, while about $67 billion came from Macbooks and iPads. Wearable devices like Air Pods and watches have grossed another $38 billion.
