New car. New rule. New driver lineup. And potentially a whole new dissection order, with entirely new competitions. Formula 1 is back this weekend – and it all started with the Bahrain GP, where simply anything is possible.
Three months after an epic 2021 season ended amid fierce controversy when Max Verstappen ousted Lewis Hamilton for the title, the list of the sport’s star drivers and teams is preparing. for the first of 23 races scheduled for later this year, all live on Sky Sports F1.
We’ll be getting ready for the week before covering all of the live action from the Bahrain International Circuit, from the first practice session on Friday to the opening Grand Prix of the season on Sunday.
A new era begins here. F1, finally, is back.
Setting the scene for F1 .’s big opening
To be fair, a lot has changed since that checkered flag of Abu Dhabi.
F1 kicked off a revolutionary new era with an overhaul of the rules that resulted in heavily altered cars, aimed at speeding up the action on the track and improving overtaking. And the early signs are that they will also rip the form book.
Mercedes, F1’s world champion for the past eight years and the team that has been ahead of the pack after the last major regulatory change, appears to have lagged behind a bit in early 2022, with both Red Bull and Ferrari appearing to usurp throne two three-day test.
In particular, Red Bull turned out strong towards the end of the final Bahrain test to show Verstappen has a big chance to retain his first driver crown, albeit – while a pessimistic Hamilton suggested the team his “not a rival” – then intense F1’s biggest star rivalry is sure to return due to last year’s bad blood.
Who is driving for which team?
Mercedes | Lewis Hamilton | George Russell |
---|---|---|
Red Bull | Max Verstappen | Sergio Perez |
Ferrari | Charles Leclerc | Carlos Sainz |
McLaren | Lando Norris | Daniel Ricciardo |
Alpine | Fernando Alonso | Esteban Ocon |
AlphaTauri | Pierre Gasly | Yuki Tsunoda |
Aston Martin | Sebastian Vettel | Lance Stroll |
Williams | Alex Albon | Nicholas Latifi |
Alfa Romeo | Valtteri Bottas | Guanyu Zhou |
Haas | Kevin Magnussen | Mick Schumacher |
Hamilton is joined by a new teammate at George Russell in 2022, the Briton finally getting his chance after three brilliant years ‘on loan’ at Williams, while Ferrari’s team of talented young drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, could well become stars if their pack is as competitive as it seems.
And it’s not just competition up front heading for the unmissable opener in the Bahrain GP, as the new regulations also seem to have closed the immediate gap, with the likes of McLaren also in the running. the hunt.
The simply unpredictable Bahrain GP is a first race of the weekend with brand new cars awaiting.
