Dan Reeves, a two-time AP coach of the year and the 10th winning coach in NFL history, died early Saturday morning at the age of 77, his family announced.
“Legendary NFL player and coach Dan Reeves passed away early this morning, peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home in Atlanta, GA,” the Reeves family said in a statement. a statement for the NFL Network. “He passed away at the age of 77 from complications of a long illness. Reeves played quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks before switching to running again in his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. He played eight seasons for the team, then transitioned into a coaching career as an assistant to the Cowboys.
In 1981, Reeves joined the ranks of head coach with the Denver Broncos and later as head coach of the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons. He set a 190-165-2 regular-season record in those three terms as well as an 11-9 record in season after season. Reeves has led a team to the Super Bowl four times, though he hasn’t managed to land a win as head coach.
Reeves was inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame in 2014.
