Former Mets reliever Jeff Innis dies aged 59
Before New York Mets Rescue Team Jeff Innis passed away on Sunday after battling cancer, the team announced. He was 59 years old.
In seven seasons at the MLB level, Innis accumulated a 3.05 ERA with 192 shots and 122 permits. He spent his entire MLB career with the Mets, throwing 360 games from 1987-93 before making several minor league stops over the next two years in the San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins and system. “He loves his fans and never shies away from any autographs,” wrote Mets VP Media Relations Jay Horwitz. “Jeff Innis was just a nice and humble guy who never made it a big deal about being a major league player. Jeff is proud that the Mets are the only team he’s played on in the major leagues. .”
Innis is said to have been battling cancer since 2017. His family has set up a GoFundMe in January to help get him from a hospital in Houston to a hospice in Georgia, where he can spend his final days surrounded by family. The campaign has a goal of $15,000, has raised over $76,000.
