Ford recalls more than 634,000 SUVs due to cracked fuel injectors (NYSE:F)
Ford engine (NYSE:F) To be recalling more than 634,000 SUVs worldwide about a cracked fuel injector that could leak fuel and cause a fire.
The recall covers the 2020-2023 Ford Bronco Sport and Escape SUV. All of models are equipped with a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine.
Ford notes that fires are rare and don’t happen with the engine off, so it doesn’t recommend that owners stop driving or park their vehicles outdoors.
However, the automaker has received 20 reports of fires, including three reports of burning nearby structures. Of these claims, four were discovered less than five minutes after the engine was turned off.
Repair service is not available at this time, but owners can bring their SUVs to their dealership and get a free lender or free pick up and delivery. Ford has also extended the warranty on cracked fuel injectors to 15 years.
Dealers will update the engine control software to detect cracked injectors and alert the driver via a message on the dashboard. In addition, the software will cut off the motor power to reduce the risk. In addition, a hose will be fitted to drain the fuel from the cylinder head and off the hot surfaces.
Ford will not replace the injectors because of the low failure rate that causes leaks.
