ADVICE – Ford Motor is extending the availability of a highway hands-free driving system to Lincoln’s entry-level Corsair crossover, as the automaker extends the technology to lower-priced vehicles.

The 2023 Corsair will be the sixth vehicle in Ford’s lineup to offer the system and only the second Lincoln model, following the brand’s flagship Navigator SUV. With system expansion – branded ActiveGlide for Lincoln and BlueCruise for Ford – Corsair will be the lowest priced vehicle in the company to deliver the technology.

The Corsair will start at around $40,000 to $55,000, including a plug-in hybrid electric model. Ordering for the crossover is open now, with the cars expected to arrive in US showrooms as early as 2023.

Ford’s Electric Mustang Mach-E currently offers the technology and starts at around $50,000, including options. Corsair will offer the system on all three vehicles, company officials said.

Dan DeRubeis, Corsair brand manager, told CNBC: “It was just a natural progression for Corsair to become a sales leader. “I think it’s an approach that we’ll continue to take with other shows going forward.”

ActiveGlide and BlueCruise use a set of cameras and sensors in addition to lid mapping for hands-free driving on more than 130,000 miles of dedicated highways in North America. It controls the vehicle’s speed and steering, and monitors the driver’s attention through an infrared camera system.

Ford says more than 75,000 customers have signed up for the system, with more than 16 million hands-free driving miles accumulated through the end of August.

Ford’s system is similar to General Motors Super Cruise Technologyhowever, they are not widely available or capable in certain situations such as turns, where the technology may require steering control back to the driver.

Both GM and Ford systems offer less capabilities than Tesla’s advanced driver assistance systems like Autopilot or “Full-Self Driving,” has been scrutinized to excessively advertise hands-free functionality and allow drivers to misuse the system.

No vehicle sold today is fully self-driving. All driver assistance systems still require the driver’s attention.

The addition of ActiveGlide to the Corsair, including lane-changing capabilities, is part of a series of updates to the car for the 2023 model year. Other changes include updated interior and exterior design such as: new grille and 13.2-inch central touchscreen, as well as new color and trim options.

Ford’s hands-free highway system is currently offered on the Lincoln Navigator as well as the Ford F-150 and Lightning pickup, the Mustang Mach-E crossover and the Expedition SUV.
