In years Ford Focus ST has grown into a great all-round company and ranks among the the best hot stews on the market right now.

It’s far from perfect, of course, with its high starting price and lack of practicality hampering the overall package, but many will consider these shortcomings as a price worth paying for a machine as talented as it is. so. Not long after Mk4 Ford Focus launched in 2018, the hot Focus ST version comes with petrol and diesel engines. The former is a 2.3-litre 276bhp EcoBoost unit that shares components with the previous entry level Ford Mustang’s engine, while the 187hp 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel is perfectly placed to satisfy Skoda and Volkswagen’s hot diesel Octavia vRS and Golf GTD models.

A recent facelift has brought in refreshed front-end styling and additional interior technology. Ford has also streamlined the range, ditching the diesel – which isn’t a huge shock given UK buyers buy petrol hatchbacks in much higher volumes.

Prices start at around £35,000 for a manual petrol model, which seems high, but is generally on par with close rivals. However, other hot hatches stand out by offering more power or better in-car technology, so how does the Focus ST stand up?

In other words, handle. Ford found a great point with the Focus chassis (as well as with the smaller car Fiesta ST) makes it come alive in a corner. The performance when you spin the wheel is truly breathtaking, so much so that you can almost feel the half-century of experience with which the American manufacturer has created sports cars.

As mentioned, competition is definitely fierce, with Cupra Leon, Volkswagen Golf Course GTI and the impressive Hyundai i30 FEMALE all compete with responsive drivers. In addition to the five-door trapdoor design, there are also Ford Focus The ST Estate version offers more towing capacity for driving pleasure. Both the hatchback and petrol mobile versions are front-wheel drive and deliver a 0-62mph time of under six seconds. The diesel can do the same sprint in about 7.6 seconds.

The ST Edition model offers an even sharper hot hatch experience, with upgraded suspension and adjustable dampers that take the ST to the next level. Additional details like the lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels and aesthetic details like the light blue stitching on the steering wheel and the leather-wrapped Recaro seats add a bit of personality.

However, none of these have come cheap, especially now that the cheapest version (diesel) has disappeared from the price list. The estate costs £1,400 more than the hatchback, and the automatic transmission is available for the same price again. For comparison, the i30 N starts at around £1,000 less, while Cupra Leon Partly inferior in top-spec guise but offers more power and performance than the ST.

Standard equipment on all Focus ST models impresses with eye-catching dark gray 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, sport seats and keyless entry. Solid Race Red is a free option, with several other colors available from Ford’s Premium and Exclusive models.
