Footballer Joelinton fined more than half a week’s wages for drink driving | World News

Newcastle United footballer Joelinton has been fined nearly £30,000 – more than half a week’s salary – after admitting to drinking and driving.

The Premier League midfielder, 26, was stopped by police in Newcastle at around 1:20 am on January 12.

The Brazilian failed a breath test, results showed he had 43mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath when the legal limit was 35mg.

District Judge Paul Currer fined him £29,000 and banned him from driving for 12 months, which will be reduced to nine months if he completes a rehabilitation course.

The judge charged the fine on top of his weekly salary, which was £43,000.

He also has to pay a £2,000 surcharge and £85 expenses.

Charged with being Joelinton Cassio, and living in Ponteland, Northumberland, he wore a dark suit, white shirt and black tie and was escorted to Newcastle Magistrates Court by a club security official.

Prosecutor, Jonathan Stirland, said officers saw his car speeding near the football field, and asked him to stop – Joelinton was forced to comply, telling them he had two glasses of wine earlier in the evening.

Defender Geoffrey Forester added: “He will be subject to disciplinary proceedings within the club once this process is over.”

Judge Currer told the court he had considered the footballer’s early confession and his compliance with police, adding that he believed the player had remorse.

However, he did warn Joelinton that drinking and driving is a serious offence.

He told the player: “What is clear to me is that you accept you made a serious mistake and a serious mistake in judgment.

“You’ve put yourself in real danger and that could have disastrous consequences for the lives of others.

“I sincerely hope you have learned from this mistake and that we do not see you in this court again.”

Joelinton’s appearance in court comes just 48 hours after scoring his team’s winning goal against Southampton in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
