Flooding in St. Louis trapped people after the historic rain
- ‘Historic’ rainfall in the St. Louis caused flash flooding on Tuesday morning.
- Firefighters rescued people and vehicles trapped by floodwaters.
- In St.Peters, several puppies drowned when they flooded a stray dog rescue building.
Missouri first responders rescued people trapped in their homes and vehicles Tuesday morning after record rainfall caused flash flooding in St. Louis and other parts of the state.
Lightning drenched the St. Louis in “historical rainfall” up to 10 inches The National Weather Service said it caused widespread flash flooding and forced roads to close. The previous daily record of 6.85 inches was set in 1915 when the remnants of a hurricane moved north; By Tuesday morning, 8.3 inches of rain had fallen at Lambert Airport.
The amount of rain caused “dangerous, life-threatening flash floods” across central and eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.
Immediately there were no reports of injuries.
In St. Louis, floodwaters seeped into homes and vehicles. The fire department rescued people from 18 homes and used boats to rescue six residents and six dogs as Motorcyclists get stuck in rising water.
In St. Peters, a town northwest of St. Firefighters on board were able to rescue other dogs from the building.
Part of Interstate 70 Near St. Peters was closed Tuesday morning, the Missouri Department of Transportation reported. Local law enforcement said Additional pathways are closed. Missouri State Highway Patrol requires drivers to avoid interstate roads in St. Charles and St. Louis until after rush hour.
Flash flood warning in effect until early Tuesday afternoon and Severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night in parts of Missouri and Illinois, can see more than 12 inches of rainfall.
