Fleetwood Mac – ‘Landslide’
I was at YMCA summer camp in the mid-90s when I first heard “Landslide.” I actually sat in a van, drove to a canoeing/camping situation for a few days with a group of our fellow kids and mentors who are college students at Ohio University and also in a fraternity there.

If I remember correctly, that was also the first summer I explored Oasis. Or maybe it’s another summer. One of the things about summer camp that they don’t tell you is, in fact, there’s a lot of downtime listening to music or building a fire or lying in bed and reading something. That’s not all the great outdoors. So much summer camp was spent relaxing with my Discman, the first teenage tantrums began to emerge.
So when I heard “Landslide” that day in the truck, it hit me almost perfectly. It’s furious, wistful, wise, cute, and short enough to be a quick one-two punch. In and out. A girl I had a crush on said, “Very well, Stevie,” after the song ended, as we drove back to some of the lakes in central Ohio. Of course, this only convinced me that this young lady and I were meant for each other. I was 12 or 13 years old then, and after a few days of canoeing, we loaded all of our trash back into the truck and drove back to camp.
We like each other well enough but it’s so solid friends area. Of course, a few days later we both went home and neither of us on that trip saw anyone else on the trip. Here’s another thing no one tells you about summer camps: You don’t make lifelong friends but intense, short-term alliances. And then it comes back to real life.
