Residents of Joshimath in Uttarakhand were left terrified after they heard sounds from below the ground at midnight on Monday.
The town is located on an old landslide so it is very vulnerable. About 12 years ago, another aquifer broke and led to a flood of water into the town.
On Tuesday, residents noticed water seeping from the ‘Joshimath rock’, driving them crazy.
People are struggling with ominous cracks and crevices appearing in their homes, roads and fields.
Nearly 26 families have been displaced from their homes and many more are lining up, leading to renewed fears that the hillside on which the town is located will collapse.
With nearly 600 homes and other sites in Joshimath showing wide cracks due to concern, Premier Pushkar Singh Dhami and a team of state governments will soon visit the hill town.
Budhi Lal Joshiyal, 57, retired Sashastra Seema Bal soldier woke up to find that old cracks in the road outside his house had widened by at least 1-2 inches.
The walls in Budhi Lal Joshiyal’s living room had large cracks.
Studies have warned decades ago that Joshimath is standing on shaking ground, but that hasn’t stopped buildings, roads, and power projects from being built at breakneck speed.
As early as 1976, the Mishra commission warned that, “For the repair of roads and other construction works, the rocks should not be removed by digging or blasting the hillside.”
More recently, in June 2021, an independent commission formed at the request of locals surveyed the area and said, “further excavation work will engulf Joshimath.”
The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority formed a multi-institutional team to survey the geology and geoengineering of the town in August 2022.
The group released its report in September, pointing out that Joshimath is “built on an unstable foundation – a thick layer of landslide material – which can sink in the event of heavy rain, tremors, and earthquakes.” , construction work is not according to regulations or the number of people is more.
Many residents also blamed the construction of a 12-km tunnel for the 520 MW Tapovan-Vishnugad hydropower project of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for causing troubles. trouble for Joshimath.
Prominent environmentalist Ravi Chopra told TOI that the punctured aquifer inside the Joshimath mountain area would act like a leaking balloon.
“Just as water would leak out of a balloon, causing it to gradually deflate, the same phenomenon may have happened inside the mountains in the area. It happened inside the mountains in the area, ” Chopra said.
That’s no consolation for the residents of Joshimath who are now searching for “immediate recovery” and seeking help to save their picturesque town.
Chandravallabh Pandey, a 65-year-old resident, said all-weather road construction and hydroelectric power plants continued unabated, exacerbating an already precarious situation.
The CM said he had sought a report from the Chamoli district judge and would take ‘swift action’ afterwards.
During his visit, Dhami interacted with locals, met with families and made sure to help them.
Dhami says their effort is to ensure everyone’s safety.
“We have already made the necessary arrangements. Our first task is to get people to safer areas. Geologists are at work. The Guwahati Institute, IIT Roorkee, is also working. negotiating with ISRO. Everyone is finding the cause,” ANI quoted Dhami as saying.
He added that they are also considering whether to migrate from here and rehabilitate people.
“We’re also looking for a location for this. It’s winter now so we’re looking at the issues that need to be addressed right away,” he added.
