Agra, Varanasi, Chennai, Pune and Ahmedabad are among 22 cities that will complete all the projects in the government’s ambitious Smart Cities Mission next month, giving their citizens a quality of life. live better and the environment is clean and sustainable, officials said Sunday.

Of the remaining 78 cities selected by mission, ongoing projects will be completed in the next three to four months, said a senior official from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The Narendra Modi government launched its flagship Smart Cities Mission on June 25, 2015 and 100 cities were selected for redevelopment through four rounds of competitions from January 2016 to June 2018.

According to the ministry, the goal of the mission is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and provide residents with a good quality of life as well as a clean and sustainable environment, in addition to adopting ” smart solutions” to various problems.

The 22 smart cities where all projects will be completed by March are Bhopal, Indore, Agra, Varanasi, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Erode, Ranchi, Salem, Surat, Udaipur, Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad, Kakinada, Pune , Vellore, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Madurai, Amaravati, Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur.

“We will complete 22 smart cities in March as the projects in these cities are in the final stages. In the next three to four months, we will complete the project works of the cities. remaining,” the official told PTI.

The implementation of the Smart City Mission at the city level is carried out by specialized vehicles. These SPVs plan, implement, operate, monitor and evaluate their Smart City projects.

On February 6, Union Minister of State and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore told Rajya Sabha that on January 27 this year, out of 7,804 projects worth Rs 1,81,322 a work order was issued. In 100 smart cities, 5,246 projects worth Rs 98,796 billion have been completed.

The central government disbursed Rs 36,447 crore under the mandate, of which Rs 32,095 crore (88%) was spent.

According to the mandate of the mandate, the central government will provide financial support at Rs 48,000 crore for 5 years, averaging Rs 100 crore per city per year. The state government or urban local authority will contribute an equivalent amount on a matching basis.

The ministry has said that currently, there are no proposals being considered by the government for the addition of cities in the Smart Cities Mission.
