Firefighters battle a blaze at the South African parliament building in Cape Town

A fire broke out in South Africa’s parliament early Sunday morning, with flames rising from the roof of a building and a plume of smoke that could be seen kilometers away, and after several hours firefighters partially extinguished the fire.

By mid-morning, smoke was still billowing from one of the buildings that make up the parliament complex in the legislative capital Cape Town.

“The fire has been extinguished in the Old Wing. Firefighters are currently trying to control the fire in the New Wing, where the fire has affected the Houses of Parliament,” parliament said in a statement.

Infrastructure and Public Works Minister Patricia De Lille told reporters there were no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Jean-Pierre Smith, a member of the Cape Town mayor’s committee responsible for safety and security, told reporters that firefighters discovered cracks in walls and roofs in one area. has collapsed.

About 60 firefighters and 12 firefighting vehicles and equipment, including a sky-lifting hydraulic rig, were on the scene to try to put out the blaze, he said.

Thick smoke rose from the roof of the Houses of Parliament and from the entrance as emergency services sprayed water inside.

The fire started in an office complex and spread to a gym just before 6 a.m
