‘Fighter’ Angel Canino continues to impress heading into UAAP debut

MANILA, Philippines – After an impressive display in Shakey’s Super League, Angel Canino is looking forward to making her UAAP debut with De La Salle Lady Spikers as she looks to improve further ahead of the Women’s Volleyball Season 85 next year. next.

Canino, 19, showed a maturity over the years in her first tournament as a Lady Spiker, stepping up when it mattered most in the previous win-lose final fell to National University again, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The tournament’s best outsider said she wasn’t the only one to drop everything on the floor.

“Hindi naman sa kaya ko lang mag-lead sa team. Lahat kami kaya naman mag-lead eh. So let’s ginawa lang namin ang best namin and mag-enjoy the court,” said Canino, who scored La Salle top with 14 points.

“Parati trainers kaming nire-reminds us to give our best lang, enjoy lang kung ano man ang kalabasan, kailangan maging masaya kami kasi alam namin na ginawa namin ang 101% namin.”

(I’m not the only one who can lead my team. Everyone is trying their best and enjoying the game. Our coaches always remind us to give our best no matter the outcome. We are happy to know that we gave 101% of our effort.)

‘A WINNER’

La Salle coach Noel Orcullo praised Canino for playing hard and showing so much promise in her first tournament as a college athlete.

“This child is a warrior. She played her best. Even when she is playing with pain, she continues to fight,” Orcullo said in Filipino. “Her determination to win is unquestionable.”

Even the coach of the NU champions, Karl Dimaculangan, who has led La Salle in the previous five meetings, was impressed with Canino’s play.

“They are a better offensive team now. And as you have seen, Canino is a warrior. Angel will give the teams in UAAP headaches,” Dimaculangan said in Filipino.

Despite failing to decipher NU’s mastery, rookie La Salle is eager to improve and use another Finals loss to learn and come back stronger in UAAP next year.

“I think we are slowly getting there. But we still have to improve our skills and characteristics on the field. Because we are Lady Spikers, we have to take our game to the next level and show who Lady Spikers is,” Canino said in Filipino. “Of course, this is just pre-season. We all know we haven’t reached our full potential as a team yet. “Canino can’t wait to debut in UAAP because she’s so excited to play for Lady Spikers with so much pride.

Canino said: “So excited to show that I’m in the DLSU, I’m excited to be fighting as a Lady Spiker.

“Shakey’s Super League was a great experience for me before playing at UAAP. It’s a big opportunity for me to grow as a player and see the things I still have to improve on,” she added.
