Fight Week: It’s Old Week, Starring Mayweather, Hatton, Barrera

Floyd Mayweather will return for another exhibit, as will Ricky Hatton and Marco Antonio Barrera go head-to-head. In real battles, Sunny Edwards will face Felix Alvarado, and Janibek Alimkhanuly will face Denzel Bentley.

  • Story: Edwards is about to face some of the world’s top little men – stars like Julio Cesar Martinez and Bam Rodriguez – but he has to get past the capable Alvarado first. The 26-year-old Londoner, an excellent boxer, won the title by defeating two-time champion Moruti Mthalane in April last year. He then successfully defended against Jayson Mama and Muhammad Waseem, winning both skirmishes by wide decision. Alvarado, 33, of Nicaragua, held the £108 title from 2018 until he abandoned it this year and moved up to 112. He made his flyweight debut in May, when he stopped Luis Cerrito Hernandez in four rounds. He hasn’t lost since consecutive defeats in 2013 and 2014, after which he won 20 games in a row.

  • Story: Alimkhanuly, 29 years old, is the 2013 amateur world champion and 2016 track and field athlete from Kazakhstan, who has been very fast-tracked as a professional athlete. Southern California-based Nampaw won the WBO’s “interim” title in his final game, a second-round knockout against previously undefeated Danny Dignum in May. He was upgraded to full champion in August. He also stopped veterans Rob Brant and Hassan N’Dam last year who set up the fight with Dignum. Bentley is a 27-year-old boxer from London. He was stopped by £160 heavyweight Felix Cash in three rounds last April but he returned to win three in a row, including knocking out Marcus Morrison in the fourth round in September, to won the title of Alimkhanuly. Also on this card, Seniesa Estrada (22-0.9 KO) of Los Angeles is expected to defend her straw belt against Jazim Gala Villarino (6-1-2, 1 KO) of Argentina.

  • Story: He’s already back. Mayweather stop mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura on September 25 in Japan, his third exhibition since he last participated in a sanctioned match in 2017. He returns on Sunday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. United Arab Emirates, where he will face British YouTuber boxer Deji. KSI’s brother took part in an exhibition, winning a knockout over friend Youtuber Fousey in August. That made him Mayweather’s second amateur opponent. He “fought” with Logan Paul last June. The Hall Famer also faced Japanese boxer Tenshin Nasukawa in 2018 and former kicking partner Don Moore this past May. His last fight was in 2017, when he stopped Conor McGregor.

  • Story: Barrera and Hatton are climbing into the exhibition wagon. Barrera, 48, has not been in combat since 2011, when the Hall of Famer from Mexico intercepted cruiser Jose Arias for two rounds in Guadalajara. Hatton, 44, last entered the ring in 2012, when the former 140-pound champion was stopped by rival Vyacheslav Senchenko for nine rounds. Mancunian will face Barrera in the same arena in which he showed his best performance, a number 11order-knock-out Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu, who earned him his first major belt. Fans expecting a fight between the once action fighters will be disappointed. Hatton says this is about fun. He told Sky Sports: “It’s a celebration.”
