Fetterman, Showing Stroke Effects, Battles Oz in Hostile Senate Debate

Five months after a stroke nearly claimed his life, Lieutenant Colonel John Fetterman, the Democratic candidate for the Senate in Pennsylvania, clashed with Dr. Mehmet Oz on Tuesday in the only debate. their most, bitter disagreements over abortion, economics and other partisanship. issues like Mr. Fetterman tried to assure voters of his health to serve.

Standing on the blue and red podium in a television studio in Harrisburg, Pa. Dr. Oz repeatedly returned to the crime issue while trying to position himself as a central candidate. Mr. Fetterman slashed Dr. Oz as a wealthy outsider unfamiliar with the economic struggles of the Pennsylvanians.

The scene of the debate itself was unusually significant given Mr Fetterman’s stroke and the speed of his recovery. Mr. Fetterman sought to solve the problem from the start. “Let’s also talk about the elephant in the room: I had a stroke,” he said in his opening remarks, adding of his opponent, “He’ll never let me forget that.”

The debate was held under unusual conditions. Located above the moderator are two 70-inch screens to show what’s being said in real time – for both questions and answers. Professional typists were on hand to attempt to document the argument as part of the accommodation that was agreed upon for Mr. Fetterman, who went public. discuss his persistent hearing processing problems after a stroke.

Mr. Fetterman’s words were frequently interrupted, and evidently when he was delayed in reading or approaching a phrase or word. But during that time, he was well-versed enough to present the Democrats’ vision of a state that could define control of the Senate.

Dr. Oz, the Republican candidate and a former television personality, has demonstrated a sharpness and ease honed over the years in front of the camera. And from the very first minutes, he seized the opportunity to infiltrate the center of politics, transforming himself into a problem-solving surgeon and repeatedly branding Mr. Fetterman as a radical.

Dr. Oz, who win the Republican primaries largely on the strength of endorsements from former President Donald J. Trump.

In the first part, Dr. Oz fully accepts Mr. Trump’s “Make America Great Again” platform. But he has since revised his statement for the general election, saying he wants “Washington to be civil again” and to be a “candidate for change”. He has said he will support Mr Trump again in 2024.

Mr. Fetterman rates Dr. Oz as a foreign forger with 10 houses. Dr Oz criticized Mr. Fetterman as a light-hearted libertarian for crime who had lived away from his parents in his 40s.

“He’s on TV and he’s lying,” Mr Fetterman said at one point. He repeatedly calls it the “rule of Oz”.

“John Fetterman thinks the minimum wage is his parents’ weekly allowance,” Dr. Oz said at another point.

On at least one occasion, Dr. Oz appeared to have condescended to Mr. Fetterman’s hearing problems. “Obviously I’m not clear enough for you to understand this,” he said.

Mr. Fetterman was able to return to a number of TV-specific TV books, although he had difficulty diving deeper into the full one-minute response process.

In defense of his criminal record, Mr. Fetterman cited his time as mayor of Braddock, a small town outside of Pittsburgh: “I was able to stop gun violence for five and a half years as a police officer. mayor – have done before since my time as mayor because I’m the only person on this stage right now – who can succeed in reversing gun violence and becoming safer for the community.”

Quick Republican cut and post Fetterman said, “I don’t believe in supporting the Supreme Court,” as he spoke of his opposition to court expansion.

Pennsylvania, one of the central battlegrounds for control of the Senate, is increasingly seen as a potential state. On Tuesday, the top Republican super PAC in the Senate announced it had added $6 million to its TV reservations in the state. The top Democrat super PAC invested an additional $5 million in the state last week.

“We believe that if we win Pennsylvania, we will get a majority,” said Steven Law, Republican Super PAC leader, Senate Leadership Foundation.

The evening went on with an intensity that matched the stakes.

Some of the most scathing exchanges involve abortion, which has featured heavily in Democratic advertising.

Dr Oz said the federal government should have no role to play in the matter but he was open to restrictions at the state level. He even tried awkwardly to come up with a new phrase to describe state governments defining abortion rights, saying he wanted the decision to be left to “women, doctors, leaders.” local politics”.

Mr. Fetterman then interrupted to link Dr. Oz to the Republican candidate for governor, Doug Mastriano, who is significantly behind in most polls and who has spoken of banning abortions starting at week six without exception. “You roll with Doug Mastriano!” Mr. Fetterman said.

The Democrat said he supported Roe v. Wade’s framework, as Dr. Oz pressed him to provide details of any limits he would impose on late pregnancies.

A series of ads this fall about crime helped Dr. Oz narrow down what once led in opinion polls for Mr. Fetterman over the summer. On Tuesday, crime was the first specific issue Dr. Oz raised, and the last he included in his closing remarks.

The Republican said: “I have spoken to families that keep their children out because the crime wave is facilitated by extreme, extreme policies like the one John Fetterman has advocated. “.

Mr. Fetterman replied, “I run on my criminal record.”

For most of the evening, Dr. Oz was annoyed, although he was more uncomfortable when it came to questions about how he had profited in the past from selling and advertising unproven medical treatments through his daytime TV show.

Dr Oz said: “The show worked really well because it provided high-quality, empowering information for everyone. When the moderator followed up to ask about his own profits, Dr. Oz did not respond directly, saying that advertisers are entitled to run ads in his program.

“I never sold weight loss products as described in those advertisements,” he claimed. “It’s a TV show like it’s a TV show.”

The two also clashed over immigration.

“Pennsylvania is already a border state,” said Dr. Oz, accusing Mr. Fetterman, who pushed for the legalization of marijuana, of wanting to legalize more drugs.

Mr. Fetterman replied that Dr. Oz was affiliated with a company that had been fined for illegally hiring people in the country. “I believe a secure border – can be compatible with compassion,” Mr. Fetterman said.

Another important problem in Pennsylvania is the fracturing process, which extracts the state’s abundant natural gas from deep within the earth. Mr. Fetterman used to oppose this approach, but now he supports it. But when Mr. Fetterman facing his past opposition, he struggled to answer. “I have always been in favor of fracking,” he insisted.

It’s not always clear that an argument is going to happen.

The Oz side have been in need of Mr Fetterman throughout the summer for not committing to any debate, but appear to have faced some backlash for focusing on his health. Operation Fetterman finally agreed to the only debate in late October, trying to give the lieutenant colonel the chance to recover as long as possible.

Mr. Fetterman stroke on the Friday before the May primaries, though he waited until that Sunday to reveal that. On Primary Day, he had a pacemaker and a defibrillator implanted. Initially, his campaign provided some details about his condition, speech in early June that he also has a serious heart condition called cardiomyopathy.

Mr. Fetterman was off the campaign trail until mid-August. Since then, he has ramped up his activism, regularly organizing rallies and giving television interviews. Before the debate, he released letter from his primary care physician states that he “has no work limitations and is able to do his full duties in a public office.”

Mr. Fetterman was pressed by regulators to release his full medical records. He refused. “For me, to be transparent is to be visible,” he said.
