Ferraro Reappointed to California Horse Racing Board


California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on January 5 the re-appointment of Dr. Greg Ferraro to the California Horse Racing Board. His appointment, which runs through January 1, 2027, requires confirmation by the state Senate.

Ferraro, 76, of San Francisco, has served on the CHRB board since 2019. He is currently chairman.

During Ferraro’s time at the CHRB, the governing body established rules in favor of the safety and welfare of horses, along with changes made by racers, veterinarians and horsemen Doctors, the equine death rate in this state has plummeted.

With Ferraro taking over as chairman of the CHRB, the regulator has further investigated the sudden death of the 1st place winner. Medina spirit at the end of 2021. CHRB also investigated a failed bet on the Breeders’ Cup 2021 at Del Mar when the early beginning of Modern game resulted in him only racing for the money when he won the Breeders’ Cup for Underage (G1T). The regulator has filed no complaints in relation to the incident that altered the outcome of multi-million dollar bets.

Formerly a practicing veterinarian on the track, Ferraro also served as Director of the University of California, Davis Veterinary Center for Equine Health from 1997-2014. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and is a member of the American Society of Equestrian Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
