A full field of 12 older horses completed the 87th run on the $150,000 Longacres Mile on Aug. Emerald Downs.
Background took 4th place at the back and was the favorite with a score of 2-1 in the morning in an attempt to be a two-time fifth-mile winner and second only at the Emerald Downs. Coached by Mike Puhich for Bob and Molly Rondeau, the 5-year-old Florida mixed-race boy has a 6-3-4 ratio in 20 careers starting with $430,488 in earnings, including a 4-1-1 record in six start at a mile.
“He had a bit of a gap between races, and he ran very fresh,” Puhich said of Background.
Magnificent Eagle , from the inventory of Hall of Fame coach Neil Drysdale, was the 4-1 second pick. A 7 year old kid Medaglia d’Oro gelding, the Majestic Eagle is a successful but unproven turf horse for dirt. Owned by Seattle locals Ray Morton and John Lindley, he switched trains north after firing two bullet drills on Del Mar’s main track.
Coach Blaine Wright has seasoned the Longacres Mile for the past four years, generating a win and three seconds since 2018, and saddle Authority at the top , Very big and Away torpedoes in this year’s race.
