Families of serial killer Stephen Port’s victims get payouts from the Met over investigation failings | UK News


The families of three of the victims of serial killer Stephen Port have been compensated by the Metropolitan Police as it handles the investigation into the murders.

The Met said it had settled civil claims with relatives of Anthony Walgate and Gabriel Kovari and partner of Daniel Whitworth.

Port was jailed in 2016 for the murder of three men and a fourth victim, Jack Taylor.

He has been given a full life order, which means he will never be released.

A Met spokesman said in a statement: “The Metropolitan Police Department has been dealing with civil complaints from the families of Anthony Walgate and Gabriel Kovari as well as Daniel Whitworth’s partner.

“We have previously apologized to families for the police failure in this matter and understand the impact these have and the suffering that has been caused. We apologize again.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families as always.”

The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) is revising the Met during the initial processing of their cases.

The watchdog said there was evidence that the initial investigation into the officers’ conduct was “seriously flawed”.

It added that “new information” had been released during last year’s investigations into the deaths of four men.

In January, a coroner’s report into the deaths of Port victims identified “a large number of very serious and very fundamental investigative misconduct” by police.

This included an “unprofessional curiosity” about the cases.

The officers have denied accusations of homophobia and discrimination, blaming the mistakes on a lack of manpower and resources.
