Fallon Sherrock is certain it’s only a matter of time before having her own PDC Women’s World Championship but believes more opportunities are needed for female players for it to happen.
Sherrock made history by lifting the Women’s First Match title at Blackpool on Sunday, a victory that has come 12 years since Stacy Bromberg beat Tricia Wright in the final to this day. is the only edition of the PDC Women’s World Championship.
Women’s eight-player match will return in 2023 along with the PDC Women’s Series event expanded to 24 events and the 28-year-old feels they are steps towards the Women’s World Championships being held at Alexandra Palace with the PDC demonstration event becoming a reality.
Sherrock, the first woman to beat a man at the PDC World Championship, said: “I think there are a few lines that need to be crossed first. “Now we have only eight women and there are several others, but there is still a big gap.
“I think we need the female series to go on and give other women more confidence and to compete more professionally. Then hopefully in a few years we can see consider that, but I really think it’s not that far away.
“We just need to give all the other women a confidence boost because I think that’s what they’re lacking.
“It will be really good [to see it at Alexandra Palace] and that would be a good opportunity for women because it showcases what we can do. We can do it; we just need more opportunities to do that and to gain confidence. “
Sherrock overcame Aileen de Graaf 6-3 in the Women’s Match final, after beating teenager Katie Sheldon in the quarterfinals and Lorraine Winstanley in the semifinals.
She was spooked by 18-year-old Sheldon, who took a 2-1 lead before Sherrock spun on three legs on the spin to book his spot in the semi-finals.
Another young rising player who could make an impact on the Women’s Series next year is Beau Greaves, 18, who won the WDF Women’s World Championship in April with dominant style and Sherrock is excited encouraged by the challenge that may face her.
Sherrock said: “Beau is already very quality, so imagine next year when she has all the experience working with WDF.
“She’s already a world champion, so imagine how many others she will be able to motivate. It will be interesting to see where Beau finishes in the series next year.
“I think that will make us play better. All these young people pushing will make us play better because we know we will have to raise our game. I can’t wait. see what will work against me now.”
